BosforTour · Answers · Winter and rain

Does the cruise sail in winter, and in the rain?

Yes. BosforTour’s dinner cruise sails every night of the year, winter included, and in ordinary rain: dinner and the show take place in two enclosed salons, heated in winter, and rain closes only the open decks. If conditions ever make sailing unsafe, you are told before you leave your hotel, and nothing is charged.

A dinner cruise sold on the strength of a summer photograph raises a fair question in November: what happens when it is cold, or raining, or blowing hard down the Bosphorus? The answer depends almost entirely on the boat. On an open-decked one, weather is the evening. On this one, the evening takes place indoors, behind glass, and the weather is something you look at.

Everything that makes up the evening — the four courses, the eight acts on the stage, the DJ and the dance floor — happens in the boat’s two enclosed salons. They are heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer, and they are walled with panoramic windows, so the shore goes past beside your table whatever is falling outside. The open decks at the bow and the stern are the extra, not the venue: the place to stand for the bridges and the palaces, when the night allows.

That is why the cruise runs all year. A December evening on board is the same evening as a June one, with the same dinner and the same programme. What changes is the light outside the glass.

The boat sails in ordinary rain. The open decks are closed while it lasts, and dinner and the show carry on inside without interruption. Rain on a panoramic window with the palaces lit up behind it is, for many guests, not the second-best version of the evening at all.

If you had planned to spend part of the night on deck — for photographs, or for air during the DJ set — a dry spell often gives you the chance, and a light rain jacket makes the most of it.

Istanbul winters are mild by northern European standards but damp, and the wind on the water at night is colder than the air in the streets. Inside the heated salons none of that matters; you will sit through dinner as you would in a restaurant. The only part of the evening that feels the season is the deck, so bring the coat you arrived in rather than leaving it at the hotel.

Winter has its own advantages. Darkness falls long before the 20:00 boarding, so the whole crossing is a night crossing, with the bridges, the mosques and the palaces lit from the moment you leave the Golden Horn. And the evening keeps its full shape in every month: the same menu, the same eight acts, the same three hours.

Now and then, conditions on the water make sailing unsafe. When that happens, guests are told before they leave their hotel, not on the pier. And because nothing is paid in advance — there is no deposit, and payment is made on board — nothing is charged, and there is nothing to claim back. You can rebook for another evening in the same WhatsApp chat.

For the same reason, your own decision is easy to change. Cancellation is free until two hours before departure, 19:00 on the day; the rules are on booking, paying and cancelling.

New Year’s Eve

31 December is a separate gala evening with its own programme, times and price, on a page of its own. Every other winter night is the evening described here.

  • A warm layer or your coat for the decks; inside, you will not need it.
  • A light rain jacket if the forecast is wet and you want time outside.
  • Comfortable shoes with some grip, since a deck in the rain is a wet floor.

Everything else — what most guests wear, when to arrive, how to get the table you want — is on what to wear and when to arrive.

Does the Bosphorus dinner cruise run in winter?
Yes, every night of the year. The two salons are enclosed and heated in winter, so dinner and the show are unaffected by the season.
What happens if it rains?
The boat sails in ordinary rain. The open decks close while it rains, and dinner and the show carry on inside, uninterrupted.
What if the weather is too bad to sail?
If conditions make sailing unsafe, you are told before leaving your hotel. Nothing is charged, because nothing is paid in advance, and you can rebook for another evening.
Is it cold on board in winter?
Not inside: both salons are heated. The open decks at the bow and stern are cold and windy at night in winter, so bring a coat if you plan to go out.
Is the view worse in winter?
It is darker earlier, which means the whole crossing is made at night, with the bridges, mosques and palaces lit. The panoramic windows give a view from every table.

To see the salons and the view from them, the main page has the boat in pictures.
